“Torture numbers, and they’ll confess to anything.” [Gregg Easterbrook]
Quick question: In your opinion, what do accountants do? [Be nice now…..]. Or maybe the question should read: ‘What SHOULD Accountants do?’
In my humble opinion, GOOD accountants, amongst a host of other awesome things, use data to help people.
Data can tell you so much about your business. It can reveal secrets that you the business owner may not be aware of. In some cases, data can be the difference between success and failure.
But not just any numbers will work for you. They need to be accurate, they need to be timely, they need to be specifically tailored to your business, and most importantly they need to tell a story. Then it’s up to you to ‘listen’ to that story.
That’s what good accountants do, they help you to understand your numbers and what they are trying to tell you.
Tip: Get your numbers in order, and get your accountant to reveal their secrets. If you don’t know what your numbers are telling you, your business is running more on good luck than good management. And that's no way to run a business.
